Although the first day of spring certainly is not here yet, it is indeed near! Right now is the perfect time to start thinking about and preparing your home for spring cleaning. There is a famous saying by William Morris, “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful”. This is something to keep in mind when decluttering your home and deciding what to keep vs what to get rid of.
We understand that spring cleaning can be a very daunting task that requires a lot of time and preparation. It can also be extremely stressful thinking about cleaning your entire home. The best way to handle this is to be prepared with a plan. The first thing we recommend doing is, block out a weekend where you can dedicate that time for spring cleaning. The second important thing to do is to sort through items in each room and put them in three piles; keep, toss and donate/sell.
Need help deciding what items to get rid of? Ask yourself these questions when you are sorting through your things:
- Is it useful?
- Does the object make my life easier?
- Does it save me time?
- Does it fulfill an essential role?
- Does it save me money?
- Have I used it in the last year?
- Am I holding onto this for sentimental value?
- Do I have a similar item that serves the same purpose?
- Is it in good working condition?
If the answer is “no” to majority or all of these questions, those items should be tossed or donated.
