When you hear the term hoarder, many of you will probably think of the popular TV show called “Hoarders” where you get an inside look into some of the more extreme hoarding cases. One of the most common characteristic of a hoarder is the persistent difficulty to get rid of their possessions.
Symptoms and Behaviors:
-Severe anxiety when trying to discard items
-Inability to throw away possessions
-Feeling overwhelmed or embarrassed by the amount of their possessions
-Indecisive on what to keep and where to put certain items
-Obsessive thoughts and actions (fear of running out of an item or needing it in the future)
Why do people hoard?
People choose to hoard because they believe that an item will be valuable or useful to them in the future, has sentimental value or is irreplaceable. Research also suggests that hoarders experience heightened difficulty when making decisions about their personal items. They also assign high levels of value towards their possessions, making it even harder to get rid of them.
It is very common for those who have this disorder, to also have an accompanying disorder such as; attention-deficit disorder (ADD), attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and obsessive compulsive personality disorder (OCPD).
Hoarding can lead to a number of physical and mental health conditions. Because of the large number of items accumulated throughout their home, living spaces are often a mess, leaving the occupants left living in very unsanitary conditions. The conditions promote the spread of bacteria and mold, which can lead to different viruses and diseases. Rodents and insects can also begin infesting the home due to the large amount of clutter.
This disorder not only causes tremendous negative effects on the hoarder themselves, but also on their loved ones. Hoarders often feel embarrassed of their condition and choose to isolate themselves from friends and family due to anger and depression.
